About me

Hello. I'm Graeme Tollins, and that word-geek in the picture is me.

For as long as I can remember, I've spent my time writing in some form or another.

Once, when I was about 13, I wrote a school homework assignment about an escape from a POW camp.

The twist? I based all the characters on teachers at my school. I even used their real names, and the portrayals were not exactly complimentary.

I was convinced I would get in trouble. Even on a good day, Miss Smith never smiled. I remember how nervous I was when I handed in my tattered workbook.

"She's going to kill me," I thought. Images of a blade falling on my neck troubled my dreams.

But, instead of the guillotine, the famously stern teacher gave me an A grade, with her red-inked comment of "I laughed. A lot" seared into my memory. What?

What more could an aspiring writer wish for?

Since my early, possibly libellous, scratchings, I have spent countless hours writing. Some of it was for personal entertainment. A lot of it became my work. But I have never tired of crafting new pieces or even editing work by others.

Words still fascinate me.

Over the past twenty-five years, I've worked mainly in academia. As an English teacher I loved the process of writing lesson plans and materials for students to learn with. Through teaching I entered the world of educational publishing. Here in Germany I have written and edited coursebooks, exams and guides for a major European publisher. I've written short fiction and topical articles for a Chinese media company. As well as helping a few local businesses get their websites in order, I've even tried my hand at self-publishing books of short stories and two novels.

Recently, I have branched out into more commercial areas, and have spent the last few years studying everything I can find about copywriting and editing with reputable educational organisations.

When I'm not writing, I can usually be found with my nose in a book, my fingers on a guitar, or scratching my head as I plough through a new course — for me learning is addictive. And if the weather is really kind, I'll get out on my mountain bike and thrash around in the nearby forests.
